Tips for new start-ups

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most successful startup businesses?

During these difficult economic times, more people have turned to the things that they enjoy or are particularly good at doing, and who can blame them?

The most successful start-ups are the ones that provide products and services for the sake of their own satisfaction or to benefit others. And, with the closure of non-essential shops, it seems that online businesses are doing better than ever before.

For example, if you have a passion for baking and decorating cakes, you could start a home-baking business and create tiered cakes, cupcakes, brownies, cookies from your kitchen at home. To drum up custom, you could upload pictures of your creative delicacies to your social media and/or website. After all, more people are turning to social media platforms to market their business online for less.

Maybe you’re someone who takes an interest in sport and exercise, and would like to help others to keep fit, lose weight or build muscle? Whilst gyms and sports clubs have been shut for lockdown – and exercise classes cancelled for the foreseeable – many entrepreneurs have decided to start-up a personal fitness business, providing virtual training sessions from their garage gym or living room. You could do the same, even when the restrictions have been lifted!

How do I get my startup off the ground?

Anyone can come up with a business idea. You only have to look around and pinch one that’s already out there – but to come up with a great business idea…that takes a little more effort and creativity.

The first step is to take a pen to paper and note down all of your ideas. If possible, you want to provide a product or service that has never been seen before and will solve a problem. If it’s not something new or outside of the box, then can you improve on an existing solution or concept or offer a more affordable alternative?

Once you’ve decided on your business idea, you can make a business plan – outlining what it is you want to do and how you’ll do it. After this, you can look at securing funding to get your startup off the ground, before considering building a website or finding premises to trade from (if you’re not planning to work from home).

Another crucial step to ensure your startup is as successful as possible is to market your business. You might have the best product in the world but – without advertising – how will anyone know? And finally, you’re going to need to establish a customer base and hone your customer service skills to ensure people keep on coming back to your business time and time again.
